WEST BOHEMIA

There are many sanatoriums in the east of the Czech Republic, close to the German border. Karlovy Vary is better known by its German name, Karlsbad, after the Holy Roman Emperor Charles IV, and has more than 60 hot springs, though only twelve are exploited for medicinal purposes. Marianske Lazne, (Marianbad), was a favourite holiday retreat of King Edward VII, and Frantiskovy Lazne, the smallest of the three main spa towns, was founded in 1793. The area is not only known for it's wide variety of treatments, but also has good golfing facilities during the summer months.

EAST BOHEMIA

Pine forest covered hills, streams, lakes and mountains and the natural habitat of wild boar, deer and mountain goats. The Krkonose mountains lie 130km north-east of Prague and form the border with Poland. They have outstanding natural beauty and in summer explode with a colourful array of wild flowers, making the extensive mountain walks even more enjoyable. In the winter the region turns into a series of small resorts with good facilities for cross-country skiing. Downhill skiing is limited but the cost is very reasonable if you are a beginner and would like to get a taste of the sport.
